July 2023 Luncheon: “Challenges and Outlook for the Swiss Trade Policy”

SCCIJ July 2023 Luncheon Speaker: Ambassador Markus Schlagenhof, Delegate of the Federal Council for Trade Agreements and Head of World Trade at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO

Over the past few decades, Switzerland has benefited enormously from the convergence of the world’s economies. Swiss imports and exports have grown steadily. Switzerland has been able to increase its prosperity and improve its standard of living.
Today, however, the trading system that has developed over the decades is being called into question. The growth paradigm itself is being called into question. Globalization’s critics are calling for another model. Keywords such as “strategic goods”, “relocation of production” and “industrial policy” are appearing in public discourse. The end of globalization and the emergence of regional blocs are predicted. Key players no longer always respect the fundamental principles of the international trading system.
What does this mean for the Swiss trade policy? And what can Switzerland do to protect itself as far as possible against possible negative developments? Ambassador Schlagenhof will be addressing these questions for the SCCIJ on the occasion of his visit to Tokyo for a meeting of the Joint Committee under the Agreement on Free Trade and Economic Partnership (FTEPA) between Switzerland and Japan.
