We are pleased to invite you to our “Shinnenkai-Luncheon”! The first SCCIJ event of the year will be the perfect opportunity to address our esteemed Members and Friends and convey our best wishes for 2022. To open the New Year on a forward-looking note, the event will feature a presentation titled “Japan’s Growth Potential and Future Challenges” by Mr. Daiju Aoki, Regional CIO and Chief Economist for Japan at UBS SuMi TRUST Wealth Management.

After a year spent under various states of emergency and hampered by the auto chip shortage, Japan’s economy is set to rebound solidly in 2022. The large-scale economic stimulus package and a still-accommodative Bank of Japan are two supportive factors for the year ahead. However, it seems global economists and investors are losing faith and interest in Japan’s long-term growth outlook. Indeed, the US-China dispute and the COVID-19 pandemic have drastically changed the global macro/political environment surrounding Japan. New Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s promotion of “new capitalism” may also have unnerved some investors. Japan’s equity market has underperformed throughout 2021 as a result.
So what should investors expect for Japan economy’s and political situation in 2022 onwards? How can Japan maintain or reinforce its international competitiveness as the global economy decouples? How will Japan adapt to the global shift to net-zero carbon emissions and digitalization? Is Japan’s governmental debt sustainable? In his presentation for the SCCIJ, Mr. Aoki will attempt to forecast Japan’s growth potential and its future challenges.
