ETH Zurich again in 11th place in Times World ranking

Tokyo (SCCIJ) – The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) has maintained its 11th place on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024. The second Swiss university in the rankings is the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) at #33, behind the University of Tokyo at #29.

Rising score

While the Swiss university maintained its position in the rankings for the second year in a row, its cumulative score rose by nearly four points up to 93.1. Scores for teaching, research, citations, and industry, improved and the international outlook dropped only slightly. In a new metric that measures its research environment, ETH Zurich ranks in the top ten worldwide.

President Joël Mesot commenting on the latest results said, “Our mission is to serve society. On this basis, it is the daily commitment of our people to education, research, and knowledge sharing that makes ETH Zurich one of the best universities in the world.”

Two areas where scores fall short, compared to other top-ranked institutions, are in its student/faculty ratio and industry income. This is due, in part, to its culturally valued, open-access admissions policy and the fact that ETH Zurich is one of the few publicly funded institutions among the world’s top-ranked universities. Some changes, however, in the rankings’ methodology also contributed to different scores.

More top rankings

In addition to the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Ranking, ETH Zurich ranked highly in other comparison rankings this year based on diverse criteria, methodology, and timing. The university achieved its highest global ranking when Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) placed ETH Zurich 7th in the world for 2024.

The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, however, places ETH in 20th place for 2023. It is also worth noting that ETH Zurich continues to be the top-ranked university in Switzerland and maintains its ranking among the top universities in Europe according to QS, THE, and Shanghai ranking portals.

Times Higher Education, QS, and the Shanghai ranking portals also published academic subject-based rankings. In these rankings, ETH Zurich was named first in the world for Earth and Marine Science, Geology, and Geophysics according to QS.

It also was placed among the top five in all three ranking portals for comparable subjects in Architecture, Computer Science, Environmental and related sciences, and Engineering (automation and control, chemical, civil and structural, electrical and electronic, as well as mechanical engineering). A further nine subjects of ETH Zurich were ranked among the top 10 in the world.
