Local recruitment

The move into Japan is supposed to enable the company to enhance its sales process and technical support for new and existing customers in the region, the Swiss specialist said in a statement. Toradex Japan already ramped up its existing team with the recruitment of local talent in February. General Manager Alvaro Garcia oversees the Japan office and also leads sales, customer support, and development of partners and distributors in the region.

Founded in November 2003, Toradex is headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland, employs 135 people, and has eight offices globally. The company specializes in embedded hardware and software, offering customized Single Board Computers (SBCs) and System on Modules (SoMs). A module incorporates many computing components like a CPU, RAM, flash memory, a power management unit, an Ethernet bus, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. The pre-packaging reduces the complexity of final product designs.

The Swiss company wants to become a trusted partner of its customers by providing technical support and product maintenance, long-term product availability, and stabilizing the supply chain, all with the customary Swiss quality. Moreover, its industrial-grade software platform Torizon promises to simplify the development and operation of Internet of Things devices running on the Linux operating system. The platform enables a scalable solution for devices requiring high reliability and security.

Deep Japan experience

In Japan, Toradex already partnered with four key distributors over the years to enable the widespread availability of its products. According to the company, their local support in Japan proved invaluable especially during the ongoing semiconductor shortage. These distributors ensured clear communication between all parties involved in the supply chain.

“With such an experience in the Japanese market, we can continue to build on our growing customer base,” said Samuel Imgrueth, Global CEO of Toradex. “The market continues to develop rapidly and is a strategic focus for Toradex. Our Tokyo office will significantly enhance our capabilities.”

Toradex started as a spin-off from the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Its founders delivered applied research services in electronics and computer science to various industries across Switzerland. Their task was to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Swiss companies. Due to its success, the government backed institution evolved into a private company to provide such services on a large scale and more economically.
