We are pleased to invite you to our November Luncheon with Dr. Jens Mehlhorn, Head of Underwriting Japan at Swiss Reinsurance Company.

In 2018, total economic losses from natural catastrophes across the world were an estimated USD 155 billion. Insurance covered about half (USD 76 billion) of the economic losses resulting from natural catastrophes, the fourth highest one-year total in history. That same year, Japan too was affected by a series of natural catastrophes. Record heavy rains, a series of typhoons and earthquakes hit the country, together resulting in insured losses of USD 17 billion. The Tohoku Earthquake back in 2011 cost the insurance industry USD 35 billion, but only 17% of the total economic loss were insured.
Dr. Mehlhorn will talk about the natural catastrophes in Japan and the world, the products that are available in (re)insurance to transfer those risks and how the industry simulates those catastrophes in risk assessment models. He will not only discuss traditional insurance but also innovative solutions of risk transfer into the capital markets, as well as parametric insurance that enables the protection of governmental assets.
