To open the New Year on a forward-looking note, the event will feature an economic forecast titled “The Great Decoupling: Implications for Businesses and Investors” by Mr. Pierre-Yves Lombard, Representative Director and Head of Private Banking Japan, and Mr. Homin Lee, Asia Macro Strategist, of Lombard Odier Group.

Shinnenkai-Luncheon 2023: “The Great Decoupling: Implications for Businesses and Investors”

The great decoupling of the global economy is already a reality for all of us. The shocking geopolitical developments in past few years more or less ensure that concerns about national security will remain a powerful driver of global trade and investment decisions, and any sensible medium-term economic outlook for the world will have to incorporate this new paradigm of fracturing of global governance into consideration.
What will be the key developments for multinational businesses and investors to monitor? What is the realistic base case scenario and its economic and financial implications? How will this decoupling affect the global effort to reduce dependence on carbon and increase resilience against climate change? Which economies or industries will be in the best position to navigate this shift?
In their presentation for the SCCIJ, Mr. Lombard and Mr. Lee will argue for an outcome that is more nuanced than the return of Cold War 2.0, with economies with highest strategic flexibility gaining most.
