Landis+Gyr and Tepco to develop IoT solutions in Japan

Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Even after the exit of its Japanese shareholders via the initial public offering in July, the Swiss corporation Landis+Gyr is expanding its Japanese business relations. The Swiss enterprise signed an agreement with Tokyo Electric Power Company, Tepco, to jointly explore the full Internet of Things (IoT) potential of Landis+Gyr’s smart meter technology. Currently, Tepco is installing 27 million smart meters and devices of the Swiss specialist in Japan. This intelligent grid network will form the basis for delivering customer services that promote energy efficiency and establishing a new energy business model.

Building an IoT strategy

The memorandum also signals a commitment from both parties to cooperate in building an Internet of Things (IoT) strategy that goes far beyond advanced metering applications to develop other ways for Tepco to monetize their technology investments and open new revenue streams. According to press reports, Tepco is considering the use of the IoT network to pilot streetlights and vending machines.

“The Tepco deployment is using the most innovative methods and technology to not only modernize grid operations, but also implement far-reaching IoT applications,” said Prasanna Venkatesan, Executive Vice President Americas and Japan for Landis+Gyr. “This provides the backbone for Tepco to revolutionize the way energy services are provided and assist their goals for enabling a smart community.”

Fastest meter deployment in history

Tepco’s ongoing advanced metering project – the world’s largest intelligent grid deployment – is nearing the halfway mark. As of the end of August, 13 million endpoints have been deployed under Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution, a standards-based IoT utility network for communicating with advanced meters, distribution equipment and intelligent devices across the system.

The deployment is now scheduled to be completed by 2020, a three-year acceleration of the initial 10-year plan. Currently, Tepco averages over 500,000 advanced meters installed each month, far and away the fastest AMI deployment in history. This was recently recognized with an Asian Utility Week Award in Bangkok for Tepco. The Japanese company won in the categories of Best Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) or Internet of Things (IoT) Network Rollout Project and Best Customer Engagement Project.

According to the company release, Landis+Gyr’s global chief executive officer, Richard Mora, said: "Despite the scale and speed of the rollout, the project continues to be successful on all key measures. The project has set the company up as an example to the global energy market of what is truly possible in the realm of smart grid and smart cities. The timeline of the project has been cut from ten to seven years, with up to 130,000 smart meters being supplied each week,” continued Mora.
