    • October 16, 2017 Swiss maker invents first new chocolate since 80 years

      Tokyo (SCCJ) – Eighty years after the invention of white chocolate, Barry Callebaut, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products from Zurich, Switzerland, has created a new type of chocolate made from the Ruby cocoa bean. According to the Swiss inventor, through a unique processing, the flavor and color tone naturally present in the Ruby bean is unlocked. Ruby chocolate has an intense taste mixture of sweet, sour and fruity elements and a characteristic reddish color. The product will come to market next year at the earliest.[more]

    • October 13, 2017 Luncheon: “Keep Swissness in airline SWISS”

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) - October Luncheon speaker Noboru Okabe put more than 40 members and guests of the SCCIJ onto an entertaining and fascinating flight into the past, present and future of the airline industry by analyzing the history of Switzerland’s largest flight carrier formerly known as Swissair. The recently retired, long-time country manager of SWISS in Japan provided an overview of the changes in the airline industry and the mechanisms behind them. He ended his lecture with a plea to foster the “Swissness” of Swissair flights in order to distinguish the flight experience from other international airlines.[more]

    • October 10, 2017 Swiss Re attracts Japanese investors

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Swiss Re, the world’s leading reinsurer, and the Japanese insurance group MS&AD have reached an agreement about an investment into ReAssure, the closed book business of Swiss Re. The Japanese are to invest up to CHF 1 billion (GBP 800 million) in order to strengthen ReAssure's ability to pursue future transactions in line with previous communications. ReAssure is a market-leading British closed life book consolidator within the Swiss Re Life Capital Business Unit. The partnership between MS&AD and Swiss Re goes back for over 100 years. MS&AD was created in 2010 by the merger of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance with its two Japanese competitors Aioi and Dowa, which also explains the acronym.[more]

    • October 06, 2017 Rebound of Japanese tourism to Switzerland

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – The number of Japanese tourists to Switzerland has been increasing during the first half of this year. This rebound reverses an overall negative travel trend since the turn of the century. “All indicators seem to be positive,” says Fabien Clerc, Managing Director of Swiss Tourism Japan, the Japanese arm of the national tourism promotion organization of Switzerland. The SCCIJ talked to Mr. Clerc about the changing traveling patterns of Japanese tourists, the attractiveness of Switzerland as a destination for incentive travel and his innovative approaches to revive Japanese tourism to Switzerland.[more]

    • October 03, 2017 Manufacture Zenith revolutionizes mechanical watch

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – The manufacture for luxury mechanical watches, Zenith from Le Locle in Switzerland, has presented the most precise mechanical wristwatch of all times. This became possible by completely breaking with the principles for the traditional gear regulator which goes back to Christiaan Huygens’ invention dating from January 1675. The new central watch component is made of monocrystalline silicon and replaces the classic balance wheel with the hairspring and anchor. “This is truly uncharted territory”, the company said on its website. The new component beats at the heart of the already sold out limited collectors’ edition of the “Defy Lab” watch model, but will be put into other timepieces from next year. [more]

    • September 30, 2017 Switzerland most competitive nation for ninth year

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Switzerland has been selected as the most competitive economy for the ninth consecutive year, narrowly ahead of the United States and Singapore. Other G20 economies in the top 10 of the latest Global Competitiveness Index published by the World Economic Forum based in Davos are Germany (5), the United Kingdom (8) and Japan (9). Japan went down one place. China is the highest ranking among the BRICS group of large emerging markets, moving up one rank to 27. The survey assesses such factors as public sector performance, macroeconomic environment, quality of education and infrastructure in 137 countries and territories.[more]

    • September 25, 2017 Integrated promotion tour of Winterthur in Japan

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Winterthur, the Swiss region close to Zurich, banks on culture and tourism to emphasize its attractiveness as a location for direct investment from Japan. A delegation from Winterthur has just completed its first Japan visit which followed this new concept: On the one hand, an exhibition with two artists from the Swiss region was opened. On the other hand, Winterthur representatives attended an industrial fair in Kobe and wooed a number of potential Japanese investors. Michael Domeisen of Location Promotion Winterthur Region called the integrated promotion tour a success.[more]
