    • August 01, 2017 Rakuten invests in Swiss health startup dacadoo

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – The digital health company dacadoo, based in Zurich, Switzerland, has completed a new capital raise with Rakuten Capital, the investment arm of the Japanese e-commerce market leader Rakuten, as the lead investor. dacadoo develops and operates a digital, mobile health engagement platform that helps employees actively manage their health in an easy and fun way. The platform calculates your personal dacadoo Health Score, a number from 1 (poor) to 1’000 (excellent). The free tracker application is free and available for all major mobile phone operating systems. [more]

    • July 24, 2017 Nestlé Japan to open second KitKat factory

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Nestlé Japan is about to open a second manufacturing line for its popular KitKat bars within its Himeji factory in Hyogo Prefecture to satisfy ever increasing demand in Japan. KitKat “made in Japan” is famous beyond the islands’ borders for its large taste variety only available there. Thus, many tourists buy KitKat chocolates at specialty stores to bring them back as souvenirs. Online sales are also steadily increasing. “We want to satisfy this demand”, Nestlé Japan said in a statement. It is the first time in 26 years that the Swiss company increases its production capacity with a new factory. The new facility will already start operating on August 1. [more]

    • July 18, 2017 Victorinox opens first Japan store with new style

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Victorinox from Switzerland, the world’s biggest manufacturer of pocket knives with its own watch, travel gear and fragrances lines, has opened a new Japan store. Located in Tokyo’s trendy area Harajuku Jingumae, it offers new shopping experiences and a wider selection of products and services, also targeting female and younger consumers. For the first time in Japan, Victorinox customers can now select their pocket knife handles and try out the Victorinox kitchen knives themselves. The store is the first Japan store without the Victorinox apparel goods collection line which will be discontinued after this autumn & winter collection. [more]

    • July 11, 2017 JSR Life Sciences acquires Swiss cell developer Selexis

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – JSR Corporation will acquire Selexis SA from Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, a pioneering life sciences company and global leader in cell-line generation technologies, to strengthen the business of its subsidiary KBI Biopharma. Selexis will be integrated within KBI Biopharma’s operations to create the most robust and fastest “Gene to GMP (Guanosine monophosphate)” service offering in the biopharmaceutical industry. The terms of the sales and the purchase agreement were not disclosed. Shortly after the deal, Takeda, the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan, entered a commercial license agreement with Selexis to get access to its high-performance research cell banks. Takeda is leveraging Selexis’ mammalian cell line-based protein expression platform to develop recombinant fusion proteins.[more]

    • July 04, 2017 Award for Japanese-Swiss team in wood architecture

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Shigeru Ban, the world-renowned architect from Japan, became famous for using recycled cardboard tubes to house disaster victims quickly. He also received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious prize in modern architecture, for his innovative use of material. Little known is his collaboration with the Swiss civil engineer Hermann Blumer for the construction of buildings with a technically demanding wooden structure, though. In fact, the creative Swiss-Japanese team has worked together on a number of projects. Now this unique collaboration has finally been recognized: As a team, they have been awarded the Schweighofer Prize 2017 which honors their groundbreaking innovations in the use of wood as a construction material.       Tokyo (SCCIJ) – In a cheery and entertaining lecture, June Luncheon speaker Dr. William Saito shared his assessments of the systemic challenges for startup companies in Japan with more than 50 members and guests of the SCCIJ, giving insights on how to be successful as an entrepreneur based on his personal experience. Dr. Saito, educated as a medical doctor, now works as a special advisor to both the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry (METI) of the Government of Japan. He has helped numerous entrepreneurial ventures and even sold or helped to take a few public. His passion for cybersecurity has led him to become one of the world’s foremost experts in this field.     • June 27, 2017 Success secrets of Swiss world market leaders

      Tokyo (SCCIJ) – A robust core business, successful expansion into new geographical sales markets, crisis management, and excellent employees are the basic patterns of small and medium-sized Swiss companies that are world market leaders in their field. This is the main result of the study ”Swiss Champions 2017“ produced by the Swiss subsidiary of the accounting and consulting enterprise PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The study shows how Swiss companies become global champions and successfully go digital. For the third edition, PwC Switzerland collaborated with Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) as its study partner.[more]
